The 21st Workshop on Stochastic Geometry, Stereology and Image Analysis is the next workshop in a series of meetings on stochastic geometry, stereology, image analysis, and related fields. The SGSIA workshops constitute a principal forum for researchers working with random geometric objects. Sin...
The Board of the International Society for Stereology & Image Analysis (ISSIA) decided to instigate an annual "Outstanding Paper Award in memory of Hans Jørgen G Gundersen". The award will go to papers containing original work in the field of stereology, which will be judged on scientific merit,...
This is an intensive workshop directed to biologists, medical doctors, psychologists, biotechnologists and, in general, for anyone interested in hands-on training on the fundaments and practical applications of Stereology. The students will learn about how to sample and measure bias-free on 3D struc...
Professor Hans Jørgen G. Gundersen MD, DMSc (1943–2021) was a pioneering stereologist whose work has inspired and influenced researchers across the world for almost half a century. He was a charismatic character and one of the founding fathers of modern stereology, whose achievements and contributio...
The 13th European Congress for Stereology and Image Analysis finished last week. We would like to thank the local organizing committee for successfully completing a virtual conference and all the speakers for excellent presentations. The ISSIA General Assembly was held during the conference, where the members discussed society's activities and approved new board members and honorary members. The new honorary member is Lucie Kubinova, for all her dedication to society and efforts in establishing the new ISSIA society. The new members of the ISSIA Board are Johan Debayle and Dvoralai Wulfsohn. We want to congratulate the new members that will contribute significantly to the activities of ISSIA!
Dominique Jeulin published a book Morphological Models of Random Structures that covers methods of Mathematical Morphology to model and simulate random sets and functions (scalar and multivariate). The introduced models concern many physical situations in heterogeneous media, where a probabilistic...
The 2021 Workshop directed by Daniel A. Peterson is offered on August 2-16, 2021. The course is reorganized to be held virtually. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a comprehensive background in the theory and practice of modern histological preparation and microscopic analysis for researche...
The International Society for Stereology and Image Analysis (ISSIA) would like to congratulate Dr. Mathieu De Langlard, who was awarded the first prize at the 3rd edition of the ISSIA PhD competition. His PhD thesis "La géométrie aléatoire pour la caractérisation 3D de populations denses de part...
We have lost one of the greatest founders of modern stereology, Hans Jørgen Gottlieb Gundersen. As a professor at the Stereological Research Laboratory at Aarhus University, he discovered a number of revolutionary methods for accurately determining the number and size of cells and structures, based on spatial sampling principles: disector, fractionator, proportionator, nucleator, rotator, point-sampled intercepts, orthogonal intercepts, vertical sections, isector, and 2D unbiased counting frame. As a true stereologist, Hans Jørgen never counted everything, he estimated the structural quantities in a sample of the whole organ/structure and therefore he also contributed greatly to the estimation of the error variance - coefficient of error - of the estimate. He economized sampling in the famous paper 'Do more less well!'.
The obituary was published in Image Analysis & Stereology in his memory:
